A bathroom that does not fit a standard size should not force you into a compromise. A made-to-measure shower tray is built to your exact floor plan — the right length, the right width, the right drain position — so you get a flush, step-free shower floor with no awkward gaps or filler strips. At Marlan we have manufactured shower trays in solid surface since 1986 and build every one to order in our own workshop in the Netherlands.
This page explains what a custom shower tray is, how solid surface differs from mineral cast, the sizes and shapes we can make, and how ordering works.
What is a made-to-measure shower tray?
A made-to-measure shower tray (also called a shower base or shower pan) is a single, seamless shower floor manufactured to your specific dimensions rather than picked from a fixed range. Instead of building up a tiled floor or fitting a stock tray and tiling around it, you drop in one solid piece that already has the fall to the drain built in.
Because it is produced as one piece in 24 mm solid surface, there are no joints or grout lines where water can creep in. The result is a shower floor that is 100% waterproof, easy to keep clean, and sits level with the surrounding floor for a true walk-in look. Every tray is colour-through, so the finish you see is the material all the way down.
A bespoke shower tray is the right choice when your alcove is an unusual size, when you want a wet-room feel without the tiling work, or when the position of the drain and the door means a standard tray simply will not line up.
Solid surface vs mineral cast
These two materials are easy to confuse, but they behave very differently over the life of a bathroom.
Solid surface is a mineral composite in which the colour runs through the entire thickness of the material. If the surface ever gets scratched, scuffed or dull, it can be sanded back and refinished — the tray is fully repairable, because there is no separate top layer to wear through. This is what every Marlan shower tray is made from.
Mineral cast looks similar at first glance but is built differently: a cast mineral core is finished with a thin gelcoat surface layer. That coating gives the shine, but once it is chipped or worn the core underneath is a different colour, and it cannot be restored the same way.
In short: with solid surface the colour and the surface are one and the same, so a custom solid surface shower tray keeps looking good for years and can be brought back to new if it is ever damaged.
Any size & shape (up to 320×150 cm, cut-outs)
We make shower trays from 70×70 cm right up to 320×150 cm, in a single piece, to any dimension in between. That covers everything from a compact ensuite to a long double walk-in shower along a wall.
Shape is just as flexible as size. We can add cut-outs for:
- walls and recesses that interrupt a clean rectangle
- pillars and boxed-in pipework
- sloped ceilings in attic and dormer bathrooms
Because the slope to the drain is engineered into the tray at the factory, the fall is correct everywhere — even on an awkward shape — so water always runs to the outlet. You send us the measurements, we turn them into a production drawing, and you approve it before we cut anything.
Slip-resistant & step-free
Safety underfoot comes from the finish itself, not from an applied coating that can wear away. The walking surface has a fine matte microtexture that gives grip when wet, and the edges are rounded to a soft R2 profile that is comfortable to stand on.
Fitted level with the bathroom floor, a custom tray creates a step-free, barrier-free shower entrance — easier to walk into, easier to clean, and well suited to ageing-in-place and accessible bathrooms. There is no raised lip to trip over and no upstand to collect dirt.
Drain options
The drain is part of the design, not an afterthought, so it sits exactly where it works best for your layout and plumbing.
- Point drain — a compact square outlet positioned centre, left or right.
- Linear channel drain — a long, discreet slot drain, ideal for wider showers and a contemporary look.
In both cases the drain cover (140×140 mm) is colour-matched to the tray, so it blends into the floor instead of standing out. Tell us where your waste pipe sits and we will place the drain to suit.
Direct from the manufacturer since 1986
You are buying straight from the workshop that builds the tray. Marlan has specialised in solid surface since 1986, and every shower floor is made to order in the Netherlands — there are no resellers or middlemen adding a margin between us and you.
That direct line matters for a made-to-measure product: the people who quote your job are the people who draw it, build it and stand behind it. Choose from 7 standard colours or more than 60 NCS custom colours, and request up to 3 free samples to check the shade against your tiles before you decide. Questions about a tricky measurement? Price & delivery
Standard sizes range from €684 to €1,018 incl. VAT, and made-to-measure trays start from €695 incl. VAT (plus shipping).
There is no online payment. After your enquiry we send an order confirmation together with a payment request, with a deposit of at most 50%.
